Inside the
Araminta Campbell
Atelier

Where Scottish Heritage,
Craftsmanship and Design
Come Together

At a time when luxury is increasingly defined by meaning and provenance, the most desirable brands offer more than beautiful products. Increasingly, consumers want to understand the people, places and stories behind what they buy.  And while many textile brands focus primarily on the finished product, Araminta Campbell has created something far more immersive: an opportunity to step inside the creative process itself.

Tucked away on the historic Hopetoun Estate, just outside Edinburgh, the Araminta Campbell Atelier is part design studio, part textile workshop and part storytelling experience. It is the creative home of one of Scotland’s most celebrated contemporary textile houses, whose work can be found in some of the country’s most notable settings. From The Witchery and Gleneagles to the Balmoral Hunting Tartan, commissioned for Balmoral Castle by King Charles III.

Surrounded by yarns, woven samples and centuries of inspiration, visitors can discover the artistry behind Scottish textiles and, for some, embark on the deeply personal process of creating a tartan entirely their own.

Araminta Campbell x The Witchery

Araminta Campbell’s bespoke work extends beyond private commissions. For Edinburgh’s iconic Witchery, the studio created exclusive tartan and tweed designs.

A meeting of two distinctly Scottish names, united by craftsmanship, character and a strong sense of place.

Bespoke Tartan - A Story Woven in Thread

For many visitors to Scotland, tartan is often encountered as a symbol of heritage, passed down through generations. At the Araminta Campbell Atelier, however, it becomes something far more personal.

The studio’s bespoke tartan design service allows individuals, families, estates and organisations to create a tartan entirely unique to them. Colours, patterns and individual threads are carefully chosen to reflect personal stories, family histories, meaningful places or significant milestones.

Dame Judi Dench famously commissioned her own family tartan at the Atelier. Within its design, 9-thread and 23-thread weaves represent significant family birth dates, while shades of blue and green reflect her love of Scotland’s rugged landscape. The process transforms tartan from a historic textile into a living expression of personal identity.

Whether commissioned to mark a wedding, celebrate a family legacy or create an enduring symbol for a business or estate, each design becomes a modern heirloom with a story woven into every thread.

Tartan is not simply something inherited, it is something that can still be shaped, woven and reimagined.

From Sketch to Loom

One of the pleasures of visiting the Atelier is seeing just how much goes into creating a piece of cloth.

Here, the journey from an initial idea to finished textile unfolds in front of you. Colours are considered, yarns selected and patterns developed before the traditional process of weaving begins. The hand looms offer a glimpse into a craft that is both highly technical and wonderfully tactile, and visitors may even have the opportunity to try one for themselves.

There is something rather special about seeing cloth being created slowly, thread by thread, in a world accustomed to things arriving almost instantly. It is this combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design that makes the Atelier feel less like a showroom and more like a thriving creative space.

Designs that tell their own stories

Beyond bespoke commissions, Araminta Campbell has created a signature collection of in-house tartans inspired by Scotland’s landscapes.

Turquoise waters, white sands and lichen-covered coastal rocks on Scotland's west coast, reflecting the colours of Araminta Campbell's West Coast Waters tartan.

Scottish West Coast Landscape

West Coast Waters & Amber Riverbank

Scottish Autumn River Landscape

From Highland hills at dusk to woodland in autumn, each takes its palette from a particular sense of place, translating the colours of the natural world into textiles. Among the newest designs are West Coast Waters and Amber Riverbank. West Coast Waters draws on cream sands, weathered grey rock, turquoise sea and flashes of golden lichen, while Amber Riverbank captures deeper tones of  pine, burnished bracken and autumn leaves gathered around Scotland’s rivers and woodland.

Rather than simply looking back to tradition, these are tartans rooted in the Scotland of today: recognisable landscapes distilled into colour, pattern and thread.

Creating Tomorrow’s Heritage

Alongside her bespoke tartan and tweed work, Araminta Campbell’s MINTA collection brings the same distinctive approach to colour, pattern and natural fibres into everyday life. From scarves and shawls to throws and home accessories, these are pieces designed not simply for a season, but to become part of the way we live.

Perhaps this is where the idea of modern Scottish luxury comes full circle. In a world increasingly drawn to provenance, craftsmanship and connection to place, luxury need not be about the new or the fleeting. It can be something made slowly, made well and made with a story worth keeping.

Scotland’s textile heritage may stretch back centuries, but heritage itself does not have to stand still. At Araminta Campbell, centuries of Scottish craft are not simply being preserved, but reimagined, creating the heirlooms of tomorrow.
