A Scented Journey Through Scotland

Scotland’s first luxury fragrance house takes inspiration from the country’s landscape, geology and history — translating a sense of place into scent.

Scotland has long bottled its landscape in whisky. However,  it was it the latter stages of her 20 year career in brand communications at LVMH, that Kingdom Scotland founder Imogen Russon-Taylor began to wonder why nobody had done the same with fragrance.

Her experience working in consumer research across both Guerlain, the French fragrance house, and The Glenmorangie Company revealed an intriguing parallel between the two worlds. Both are rooted in the art of distillation; both rely on the careful blending of ingredients to create layers of sensory experience; and both have an extraordinary ability to trigger memory and emotion.

What followed were several years of research. Delving through the National Archives in the hope of reviving a Scottish fragrance house from the past, Imogen discovered that there wasn’t one. So she set about creating Scotland’s first fine fragrance house herself, and in 2016 Kingdom Scotland was born.

Inspired by the culture, history, geology, and natural ingredients of Scottish landscape, her scents bottle Scotland in an entirely contemporary way, drawing on the mythology and legends woven through its landscape. She describes Kingdom Scotland as “a timeless realm explored through scent”.

Kingdom Scotland x The Macallan

Macallan x Kingdom Scotland candle

A Warm Scottish Welcome

Kingdom Scotland’s ability to translate a sense of place into scent has extended beyond its own fragrance collection. In a rather fitting full-circle moment, Imogen returned to the world that first inspired the idea for Kingdom Scotland, collaborating with The Macallan to create two bespoke candles.

Estate — Nurtured by Nature captures The Macallan Estate through mineral and botanical notes, moving through wild moss and woodland flora to Scots pine, fir and oak.

Easter Elchies — Spiritual Home takes its inspiration from the historic heart of The Macallan. Imparting notes of warming spice, velvet rose, leather and fireside wood. This is a Scottish warm welcome in every way.

kingdom scotland experience

Kingdom Scotland's fragrances can be worn, gifted... or experienced.

Kingdom Scotland’s fragrances are designed to evoke a sense of place, but the experience doesn’t have to end with the finished perfume. Through a range of immersive scent experiences, guests are invited to explore Scotland through its aromas, ingredients and stories.

Using individual fragrance notes, guests can discover how a scent is constructed, how they developed their own sense of scent, and also how ingredients interact to create something altogether more complex. It is part fragrance discovery, part sensory journey, and an opportunity to experience Scotland from an entirely different perspective.

These experiences can be tailored to different groups, venues and occasions — from a banquet dinner to an intimate scent experience in the comfort of a hotel room.

For Imogen, it is another way of bringing the Kingdom Scotland philosophy to life: connecting scent with landscape, memory and emotion, and encouraging people to experience Scotland through more than simply what they can see.

From the wildness of Portal to the warmth of Metamorphic, there is something wonderfully transporting about Kingdom Scotland.

Almost a decade after Imogen Russon-Taylor set out to create Scotland’s first fine fragrance house, the Kingdom continues to expand. Through new scents, collaborations and experiences, each offering another way to discover its realm.

If in doubt: Begin with the Discovery Set and take your time. Choosing a fragrance is, after all, a very personal affair.
